Chard
One of our fresh vegetables at market now is chard.  Chard is best prepared by separating the tender leaves from the crunchy stems, sautéing the stems first, then wilting the leaves in olive oil with garlic and lemon.  Tasty on its own this way but also highly versatile in soups, pastas, or with other ingredients as a side dish. Common methods include pan-searing, steaming, or using it in hearty dishes like gratins or with beans.   Our recipe this week is for simply sautéed.

Remember, the market is now offering hot coffee made from locally roasted coffee beans. ☕️ You can find it next to the Goatboy Soaps.

Things of note at the market this week.  For the complete list of participants see below.
- Jessica's Homestead Kitchen is not at market this week.
- Farm Faraway Homestead and Food for the Soul by LR are both participating this week.
- Anderson Acres Farm is with us through the spring, this week bringing more tulips: Marie Joe - buttery yellow double-tulip, Spring Tide - luscious raspberry triumph tulip, Salmon Van Eijk - romantic peach single-variety tulip, Hakuun - angelic white single-variety tulip
- Looking forward Chanticleer Acres, DeerDana Provisions and Fil'd Treats will be back with us toward the end of the month.

Our recipe this week is Sautéed Chard with Garlic and Lemon.   Easy to prepare, pretty to look at and tasty.
Add a little red pepper flakes if you want it a little spicy.

We look forward to seeing you weekly at our indoor location at the Litchfield Firehouse, 258 West Street, Litchfield, CT 06759

SUSTAINABLE TIP OF THE WEEK
Key Sustainable Tips for March in New England from the Food Gardening Network.
  • Indoor Gardening & Preparation: Start warm-season crops like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants under lights, and prune fruit trees (apples, pears) while they are still dormant.
  • Energy Savings: As temperatures fluctuate, continue saving energy by using cold water for laundry and avoiding the dryer when possible.
  • Responsible Cleanup: Clean, non-toxic household products are recommended for spring cleaning, and ensure plastic/metal recyclables are rinsed to prevent contamination.
  • Sustainable Shopping: Buy local produce and goods to minimize transportation emissions.
