MICROGREENS There are a wide variety of microgreens the names of which should sound familiar: basil, beets, Swiss chard, broccoli, mustard, arugula, amaranth, and peas among others. Microgreens are simply the versions of these vegetables and herbs when they are in their tiny sprout form. There are around sixty different kinds of microgreens. Not only do they add a nutritional punch to salads, soups, or sandwiches, but they are also tender and offer delicious flavor. Early research has indicated that microgreens contain up to 40% more phytochemicals (beneficial nutrients and components) than their full-grown counterparts. They contain extremely high levels of powerful vitamins, minerals and health-supporting components. With over 60 varieties of microgreens and microgreen blends available, there is no shortage of tasty and healthy choices when it comes to what to explore. We offer a yogurt dip with them as our recipe this week.
We heard from those of you who attended the market last week that you enjoyed seeing the firetruck and firemen in the parking lot celebrating Litchfield Fire Department Appreciation Day. SUSTAINABLE TIP OF THE WEEK Celebrate Earth Day -April 25 - by supporting Litchfield's Annual Roadside Clean-up Sustainability is the goal for so many aspects of our lives. We want to sustain friendships, gardens, bank accounts, body condition, air quality, water potability, natural environs, and -basically- our way of life. To keep our surroundings looking appealing =and even inspiring- we do need to all work at cleaning and picking up. This Saturday, April 25th, Litchfield will celebrate Earth Day with its Annual Roadside Clean-up sponsored by the town's Waste Reduction Committee. All residents are encouraged to help in this community endeavor. See the poster below for details. |
